CHAPTER 23

Outside the bar, the chaos was even worse. A couple of stressed-looking cops were trying to herd the crowd away from the building, while firefighters pushed their way through the mass of moving bodies. Drinkers were streaming out of other nearby bars to see what the fuss was about, while our customers, now safely away from whatever they thought had caused the panic, were stopping to compare notes, shouting excitedly about what they had seen, and generally getting in the way.

I emerged from the building, pushing the last few customers ahead of me, as the first firefighter made it through the door.

“It was in the main bar,” I said, hoping to deter them from investigating the back room where the transformed weres were hiding. “I think the sprinklers have put it out.”

“Thanks,” he said. “Now you go get to safety.”

I wasn’t sure anywhere was safe right now, with people carrying Mond nearby, but it seemed best to comply with the emergency services. I didn’t want to make this situation any worse than it already was.

Stepping away from the building, I glanced around the crowd. Most of those suspicious faces from earlier were gone, presumably having fled with whatever evidence they thought they had captured on their phones. I saw a couple lurking near the fringes, cameras still out, but I also saw friendly witches heading toward them with determined looks and the flicker of magic in their eyes. They should be able to deal with the phones discreetly, while I tried to manage the brewing PR nightmare. The last thing we wanted was some lurid story about a disaster in a bar drawing unwanted attention to the pack.

More vehicles were pulling up, some with the lights of emergency services flashing, others the ordinary vehicles of gawkers or journalists. I headed to the north corner of the crowd, where a burly police sergeant was addressing a small group armed with cameras, microphones, and notebooks. On the way, I pulled out my phone and ran a hasty search for a few obscure facts. We were going to need a cover story, and one was already forming in my head.

“We don’t yet know what happened in there,” the cop was saying. “We probably won’t know anything tonight, so why don’t you all go report on some real news, and wait for a report in the morning?”

I could tell by the tone of his voice that it was a familiar speech, and one he knew was doomed to fail. But if he had the journalists corralled, perhaps I could make the most of the opportunity.

“Excuse me, sergeant,” I said. “I’m the lawyer for the management of this bar, and I was inside when this happened. Perhaps I can help?”

I handed him a damp business card. The journalists eagerly shifted the attention of their cameras and microphones to take us both in. The sergeant narrowed his eyes and flicked a glance at the cameras, but there was no easy way out of this for him.
